~Welcome to Natural Childbirth Education~

What is Natural Childbirth?

-S: (n) natural childbirth (labor and childbirth without medical intervention; no drugs are given to relieve pain or aid the birth process) “natural childbirth is considered the safest for the baby”

(wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn)

…….You often hear women asking one another, “did you have your baby naturally?” This question is misleading, because the majority of births in America are NOT natural, they are simply vaginal. A true natural birth is one, as the definition above states, without any drug helping relieve pain or aid in the process.

…….Many studies show that choosing a true natural birth is more healthy for both mom and baby and has better outcomes for attaining a labor without complications.  Women who choose to birth naturally have a much lower chance for the common complications of labor such as fetal distress, blood pressure issues, assisted delivery with forceps or vacuum extraction, or cesarean section.

So How Do I Better My Chances For A Natural Birth?

…….There are many things that you can do to improve your chances for attaining a natural birth.  One of the best is to get formal training.  As much as our bodies are created to deliver babies, it does not come without practice.  Labor is like running a marathon, it takes time, endurance, knowledge, and training.  It is recommended to get “formal” training (outside the hospital classes) because 3rd party classes are not biased to the legalities of the hospital.

…….Another way to help attain a natural childbirth is to eat a well balanced diet and get an adequate amount of physical activity in your day throughout your entire pregnancy.  Again, if you view birth as a marathon, then it helps put into perspective how your body needs to be prepared for such an event. Marathon runners do not stay stagnant and eat poorly and then run a marathon.

…….A third way to attain a natural childbirth is education.  Statistically women who do not do outside education about the natural process, their rights, their options, etc are more likely to end up with complications in their births.  Knowing your birth locations c-section rates, procedures and policies and having a detailed birth plan addressed with your birth team ahead of time, will increase your chances of being the one in control for your labor and having the outcome desired.

Some women choose to give birth using no medications at all, relying instead of techniques such as relaxation and controlled breathing for pain. With natural childbirth, the mother is in control of her body, usually with a labor assistant gently guiding and supporting her through the stages of labor.
